Topic: Number Your Days Wisely

Text: Psalm 90:12

Psalm 90:12 – “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

Reason to number our days: To live wisely,

James 4:14 – “How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.”

Ephesians 5:15-16 – “Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Introduction

As we enter a new year, many of us set goals, make decisions, and reflect on the past. Psalm 90:12 reminds us to “number our days” and to use our time wisely. Life is brief, and every day is a gift. The time we have is limited, and how we spend it matters. In this New Year, let us learn to value every moment, seek God’s wisdom in our decisions, and live purposefully for His glory. To encourage believers to live with intention by acknowledging the brevity of life, seeking God’s wisdom for decision-making, and dedicating their time, talents, and treasures to glorifying God.

What are the things we should develop in the New Year?

1. Acknowledge Life’s correctly: (Psalm 90:12; James 4:14)

The psalmist asks God to help us “number our days,” recognizing that life is fleeting. James reminds us that life is like a mist—appearing for a short time and quickly vanishing. This perspective calls us to stop taking time for granted and to recognize the preciousness of every moment.

Acknowledge that every day is an opportunity to grow in faith and live for eternity.

2. Seek God’s Wisdom: (Psalm 90:12; Ephesians 5:15-16)

When we understand the correct use of life, it becomes essential to seek God’s wisdom in how we use our time. Ephesians 5:15-16 urges us to make the best use of our time because the days are evil. Wisdom from God helps us discern what is truly important and put our choices with His will.

Start each day by seeking God in prayer. Ask for His guidance in the decisions you make, whether big or small. Wisdom from God allows us to focus on what truly matters and avoid distractions that can lead us away from His purpose.

3. Live purposefully: (Colossians 3:17)

Living wisely involves dedicating our time, talents, and treasures to glorify God. Colossians 3:17 tells us to do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, which includes how we spend our time. Whether at work, in relationships, or during leisure, we should live intentionally to honor God.

Consider how your time, gifts, and resources can be used for God’s kingdom. Make decisions that reflect your faith and prioritize activities that bring glory to Him. Aim to be a good steward of everything God has entrusted to you.

Conclusion

As we look ahead to the New Year, let us embrace the wisdom of Psalm 90:12 and “number our days.” Life is short, and every day is an opportunity to live for God’s glory. By acknowledging the brevity of life, seeking His wisdom in all things, and living intentionally, we can make the most of the time He has given us. May this year be one of purpose, dedication, and service to our Savior, as we seek to glorify Him in all that we do?

I pray that it brings you renewed purpose, wisdom, and joy. May you embrace each day with gratitude, seek God’s guidance in every decision, and live intentionally to glorify Him. Here’s to a year full of growth, blessings, and opportunities to serve and honor God. Happy New Year!
